Causes Of Nail Fungus

Our Body plays host to a variety of microorganisms including some fungus (fungi), that usually exist within us without any detrimetal effect.

However, some of these (fungi) can on occasion, multiply rapidly to form infections, such as fungal nail infections.

This can happen incedentally or be caused by something quite insignificant such as a stubbed toe or bashed finger. The microorganisms that can cause fungal nail infections include:

  • Dermatophytes, this is the most common cause, also responsible for athlete’s foot
  • Yeasts such as Candida that can cause thrush
  • Weak Immune System, If our immune system is not functioning properly through other illness or poor diet
  • Bad Circulation of Blood, a fungal infection can take a hold if nutrients are not being supplied by blood flow
  • Trauma, if a nail (toenail or finger) is subjected to a trauma and the nail lifts from the bed, fungus can grow underneath in the sodt tissue
  • Some medical conditions such as psoriasis or circulatory problems
  • Enviroment, this could be one of the biggest causes. If you hands or feet are consistantly immersed in water or warm temperatures you are providing an ideal breeding ground for the fungus.

Quite often the nail fungus condition develops because of a fungal infection of the skin, like athlete’s foot for example, isn’t treated early enough so the fungus can spread into the nails.

Once the infection is into the nail bad, the infection is much harder to treat than if it’s on the skin, because the fungi can penetrate the lower levels of the nails where it’s harder for treatments to reach.
